The Clutch is an important part of a manual vehicle, allowing you to change a gear. It does this by disengaging the drive of the engine, manipulated by the clutch pedal. Like many car components the clutch can wear over time, and this can result in an inability or difficulty in changing gear.
Clutches consist of 3 main parts, the clutch plate, pressure plate and flywheel. Typically, clutches last anywhere between 50,000 and 100,000 miles, but various factors such as the vehicle, driving style and regular maintenance can affect how long it lasts.
A well-maintained clutch gives a much greater level of control, making driving and handling much easier. It is, therefore, worth taking care if you notice any of the following symptoms.
- Slipping clutch
- Difficult changing gear
- Sticking
- Lack of friction
- Spongy clutch pedal
- Higher biting point
- High RPM
- Hesitant accelerating
- Burning smell
